Boy, 1, in Critical Condition After Alleged Methadone Poisoning; Grandmother Charged

A 1-year-old boy is in "critical/acute" condition after allegedly being poisoned with methadone, according to the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said a mother rushed her son to Calvert Memorial Hospital on Friday after the boy appeared to be very lethargic and had symptoms of being poisoned. Detectives said the child had been in the care of his grandmother before being picked up by his mother.

The medical staff at Calvert Memorial Hospital began treating the boy by administering several doses of naloxone. The boy was later transferred to Georgetown University Medical Center, where it was determined he was suffering from a methadone overdose.

The boy was treated for the overdose and is being monitored for cardiac and respiratory issues. He is listed in critical/acute status by the hospital.

Police said the grandmother, who has not been named, has been charged with first-degree child abuse, first-degree assault and distribution of a controlled dangerous substance.
