The District of Columbia and a man who sued the city over its gun laws are both appealing a judge's award of attorneys' fees in the historic case.
Both sides gave notice of their appeal Thursday.
A judge ordered the city in December to pay more than $1 million to attorneys for Dick Heller, who sued the city in 2003 over its ban on handgun ownership. The U.S. Supreme Court overturned the ban in June 2008, saying it violated the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment.
Heller's attorneys had argued they should be paid $3.1 million for their work. Attorneys for the city had argued that attorneys' fees should be closer to $840,000.
