A body was found in a channel between Roosevelt Island and the Virginia shoreline, fire officials say.
Someone walking in the area saw the body Monday morning, fire officials said on Twitter.
Crews recovered the body, and the Metropolitan Police Department is leading the investigation.
No further details have been released.
The National Park Service closed Roosevelt Island Monday ahead of a storm that's expected to bring damaging winds and hail to the region. The park service says many of the island's ash trees have been infected by the deadly emerald ash borer, making them more like to fall during storms.
