Hope Amid Heartache: Body Cam Video Shows Emotional Moments After Silver Spring Apartment Explosion

Newly released body camera video shows the flames, debris and chaos during the aftermath of the devastating apartment explosion in Silver Spring, Maryland -- and many courageous officers and firefighters staying calm through it all.

Seven people died, dozens were injured and more than 80 families were left without a home after the Aug. 11 explosion.

Montgomery County police released body camera video Friday from several officers who responded to the explosion at the Flower Branch Apartments.

In one emotion-filled moment, someone can be seen handing an officer a baby. The officer swaddles the infant and eventually finds the baby's parents who are overjoyed with relief.

Officer Jeffrey Hughes was one of several officers and firefighters honored at a public safety awards luncheon on Friday for showing courage during the devastation.

"It's sad there are people that I... It's just, you know, reflecting back on it, it's just really sad," Hughes said with emotion.

Officers who responded to the shooting at the Westfield Montgomery Mall parking lot in May were also honored.
