Bodies of Man, Dog Found Along Anacostia Riverwalk Trail, Sources Say

A man and a dog were fatally shot Wednesday along a Northeast D.C. trail, sources say.

The bodies were found on the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail, beneath the East Capitol Street Bridge in the River Terrace neighborhood. Witnesses reported hearing about a half-dozen gunshots about 8:30 a.m.

Investigators found two dogs at the scene, sources said: a small dog that survived and a larger dog that was fatally shot.

Investigators are looking into the possibility that the dogs belonged to the murder victim.

Police said they don't yet know whether this was a random or targeted killing.

"If you're on the bike trail anywhere, or if you're walking in a wooded area, you should always be aware of your surroundings... but I'm not telling the citizens at this point to be alarmed," said Capt. Anthony Haythe, head of the D.C. homicide squad.

Haythe said the bike trail is heavily used, with a lot of traffic on the trail each morning.

Authorities are on the lookout for a man who was dressed in black and riding a red mountain bike.
