Biden May Need New Bunker

For once, Biden keeps his mouth shut and lets his fingers do the talking.

WASHINGTON -- The vice president probably should find a new bunker after apparently revealing the location of the hideaway that housed former-VP-turned-Sunday-political-talk-show-guest Dick Cheney after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

At the annual Gridiron Club dinner at which politicians and media rub elbows, Joe Biden, who was subbing for President Barack Obama told those at his head table about the hidden room at the Naval Observatory, where Cheney lived for eight years and Biden lives now, according to Newsweek's Eleanor Clift.

"(Biden) said the young naval officer giving him a tour of the residence showed him the hideaway, which is behind a massive steel door secured by an elaborate lock with a narrow connecting hallway lined with shelves filled with communications equipment. The officer explained that when Cheney was in lock down, this was where his most trusted aides were stationed, an image that Biden conveyed in a way that suggested we shouldn’t be surprised that the policies that emerged were off the wall."

If the country is less safe because of the Obama administration, as Cheney has suggested, Biden might be wise to find a different secret hiding place, one that hasn't been outed, just in case there is another massive attack.

This isn't the first time Biden's mouth has raised eyebrows. A day after the inauguration, he seemed to upset Obama with a quip about the oath of office flub. A couple of weeks later, he threw out a 30 percent chance of failure rate for the economic bailout. He seemed particularly stodgy when referring to a URL as a website number in February. He upset transit agencies and airlines when the swine flu scared him away from either mode of transportation. And he may have started a canine rivalry when he told a bunch of fifth-graders that his dog is smarter than the president's -- beloved Bo.
