Parents in Prince William County are being asked to be alert after a mother bear and her cub were seen near Antietam Elementary School in Woodbridge.

The bear and cub were spotted Friday around 8 a.m. Police sent out to the scene could not find the animals, but the sighting prompted a telephone warning to parents. The school is asking that adults walk with their students to and from school each day.

Police say bears usually avoid humans but may wander into suburban areas in search of food.
