Man Dressed in Head-to-Toe Red Robs Fairfax Co. Bank

Just six days before Christmas, a man decked out head-to-toe in red robbed a Fairfax County bank Friday.

Authorities say the man robbed the BB&T bank in the Greenbriar Shopping Center at 13045 Lee Jackson Memorial Highway around 12:12 p.m. Friday.

The man entered the bank while wearing a red shirt, red pants, a red hooded jacket, a red knit cap and black boots. He passed a note to a teller demanding money. He received an undisclosed amount of cash and ran from the bank.

It's the 13th bank robbery in Northern Virginia in just the last seven weeks. In recent years, the FBI said they've seen a trend in which 25 percent of all bank robberies in the region plus the District of Columbia occur in December. Shoppers at the Greenbriar Town Center said they suspect a link between the holidays and bank robberies.

"It's kind of sad that the holiday pressure would push people to desperation to do something like that," shopper Heather Norton said.

One shopping center employee said the trend is frightening.

"I understand it's hard and all to get gifts for the family but that's too far," said Akeada Mark. "It's scary. It could have been us."

Police said the latest suspect has not yet been tied to any other bank robberies, but they will be looking at that possiblity. The FBI is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to the identification, arrest and conviction of this bank robber.

Anyone with information is asked to call the FBI at 202-278-2000 or the Fairfax County Police at 703-691-2131.
