Baltimore Co. Police Shoot, Kill Man after Stun Gun Fails

Two Baltimore County police officers shot and killed a man who refused to drop a knife at a convenience store early Saturday, police said.

The officers were called to a 7-Eleven store in Randallstown for the report of a man with a knife, according to police spokesman Officer Shawn Vinson. Two officers responded and found the man standing outside the store with the knife.

Police said the officers ordered the man to drop the knife, but he refused. The man approached the officers with the knife, so they tried to subdue him with a stun gun. When that didn't stop him, both officers shot the suspect, police said.

"Our preliminary investigation does appear that he came at the police officers,'' Vinson said.

The man was taken to a Sinai Hospital and pronounced dead. Police later identified the man as 56-year-old Edward Bright of Randallstown.

Sunny Desai, the owner of the convenience store, told WBFF-TV that the suspect who was killed knew the store employee and told the worker to call 911.

"My employee say `Why call 911? You haven't stolen anything from my store. OK so I don't call 911,''' Desai said.

Shortly after, the suspect stole a bag of chips, Desai said. The store employee called 911 when the man went outside, pulled out a knife and tapped the door, Desai said.

The officers were placed on administrative leave pending an investigation. The police department's policy is to not identify the officers involved for 24 hours, Vinson said.
