‘Went Above and Beyond': Bus Driver Killed in Baltimore Crash Remembered as a Loving Mother of Four

MTA Bus driver Ebonee Baker was one of six people killed in the Baltimore crash.

Friends and family say the Maryland Transit Authority (MTA) driver killed in a two-bus crash in Baltimore was 33-year-old Ebonee Baker.

Baker was one of six people who died when a school bus smashed into a Mustang and then an MTA bus Tuesday morning.

The other people killed include the 67-year-old school bus driver, who has not yet been identified, and four riders on the MTA bus. Ten other people were also injured. No children were aboard the school bus at the time of the crash.

Ebonee Baker's sister, Deonne Perry, said Baker always said she would be a teacher or a bus driver and did everything she wanted to do, including having four children whose names all started with the letter T.

Perry said both she and her sister worked overnight and last spoke around 3:45 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Perry said she saw images of the crash while at work, but it wasn't until she saw multiple missed calls on her phone that she suspected anything.

Rev. Donald Wright of Greater Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church in Baltimore said Baker was a member of his church. He said Baker made her family and children a priority.

Wright described her as friendly, funny, and someone who "thought she could fix any problem." She "always went above and beyond, always wanted to do more and always wanted to shine."

Baker left behind her husband and four children. Friends and family said she also loved the Baltimore Ravens and Maryland crabs.

Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board are still trying to figure out exactly how the crash happened and whether the 67-year-old school bus driver suffered a medical emergency at the time of the crash. An autopsy, survivor's account and recording equipment recovered from one of the buses may offer answers.

The school bus driver first hit the Mustang, and then hit the MTA bus head-on while traveling east on Frederick Avenue, leaving behind a "horrific" scene, police said.

A female aide who survived the crash with minor injuries was the only other person aboard the school bus, according to Baltimore police spokesman T.J. Smith. He also said the recording equipment recovered from one of the buses may have captured video footage of the crash.
