Babysitter Accused of Burning Child in Dumfries

A babysitter in Prince William County is charged with felony child abuse after severe  burns were discovered on the arm of a 9-year-old girl, according to Prince William County police.

Keedra Lashae Smalls, 21, of the 3100 block of Chesapeake Drive in Dumfries, Va., is accused of mixing salt and ice and holding it on the bare skin of the victim on Feb. 26.

The combination of salt and ice is known to create burns on the skin and is often done as a "game" referred to as the Salt and Ice Burn Challenge.

The burns and swelling on the victim’s arm were discovered at school March 4, and police were immediately notified. Following the investigation by detectives from the Physical Abuse Unit, Smalls was arrested March 5.
