Student Stabbed at Silver Spring High School

May have been stabbed with a pencil or pen

A student is in custody following after a stabbing at Northwood High School in Silver Spring.

Chidat Tarawally, age 18, of the 12500 block of Winexburg Manor Drive in Silver Spring, was charged with first and second degree assault and with possessing a weapon on school property.

Authorities said the stabbing may have been due to a dispute Tarawally and the victim had last week, Pat News4's Collins reports.

The incident happened around 11 a.m. Monday in or near the cafeteria. The victim received a non-life-threatening "puncture wound," authorities said. They later said the weapon appeared to be a knife.

The victim was transported to a local hospital. He was described as being uncooperative with authorities, Collins reports.

Montgomery County Police are investigating, and are viewing video captured by a security camera. The suspect, an 18-year-old student, fled the scene, police said, but was later arrested on school grounds as he returned to the school.

Detectives are determining whether a knife recovered on school grounds is the knife used in the assault.
