Montgomery County's Board of Appeals Denies Costco Gas Station Plan

Costco's plan to build what would have been a mega gas station may be out of gas.

The Montgomery County's Board of Appeals denied a petition Wednesday to build the gas station at the Westfield Wheaton Mall site on Veers Mill Road.

The community says the board's decision is a victory for the little guy.

"This proposal should've never been put forth to begin with and it issad and disheartening that our community has been put through such a nightmare scenario," said resident Danila Sheveiko.

Some Kensington Heights residents believed the 16 pump gas station would be a health hazard. The group argued that fumes from idling cars would harm those who use a nearby community swimming pool and disabled children enrolled at the nearest school.

But Costco says the station would meet state requirements.

Meanwhile, the board believes there's no need for another gas station.

While Costco can appeal the board's decision, representatives at Wednesday's meeting wouldn't discuss the company's next step.
