Another Pedestrian Struck, Killed in Fairfax County

For the second time in three days a pedestrian has been struck and killed in Fairfax County.

Aaron McCullough was walking in the left lane of Richmond Highway in the Mount Vernon area when he was struck by an SUV about 6:15 a.m. Tuesday, police said. He was not in a crosswalk.

Security camera video shows McCullough step into the southbound lanes and walk down the middle of the road.

“I've watched this tape several times since I got here at 9:30 this morning and still trying to figure out why did he stay in the street instead of going across,” property manager Leroy Washington said.

McCullough was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 69-year-old woman driving the SUV stayed at the scene, police said. Neither speed nor alcohol appears to be a factor, and no charges are pending.

Many people dash across instead of walking to the nearest intersection crosswalks, Washington said.

Sunday evening, 76-year-old Hung Soon Seo was struck at 11400 North Shore Drive near the Lake Anne Plaza shopping area, Fairfax County Police said. She also was not in a crosswalk.

In the Springfield area Tuesday, community leaders celebrated the opening a brand new high-tech crosswalk aimed at improving safety. A HAWK pedestrian beacon made its debut on Backlick Road. Previously, people had to walk blocks to get to an intersection with a traffic light. Now the HAWK stays dark until a pedestrian pushes the button. Then it flashes yellow before turning red to stop traffic and allow the pedestrians to cross.
