City Council members in Alexandria will soon be facing a stark choice that will radically change three industrial spots on the waterfront: Should the land become hotels with more than 600 rooms, or should that space be reserved for a maritime museum and parks?
Boyd Walker, chairman of the Greater Alexandria Preservation Alliance, said allowing hotels would be a big mistake.
"The quality of life of citizens of Old Town will be impacted by traffic, motorcoaches coming to the hotels and commercial development on the waterfront," Walker said.
That's why he'll be conducting a press conference Saturday to offer an alternative plan in opposition to the Planning Department's proposal.
But Alexandria Chamber of Commerce President Tina Leone said hotels will generate revenue for the city government.
"We have all due respect for people who live on the waterfront, but this is an asset that should benefit all Alexandrians and should be enjoyed by all Alexandrians," Leone said.
City Council members could make a decision as early as May.
