Alexandria Wins Legal Battle Over Waterfront Development

Alexandria has won a prolonged legal battle to go forward with development plans for the city's waterfront.

The Virginia Supreme Court ruled Friday that any errors made during the process of approving the development had been corrected by the City Council. The council voted a second time and passed the plan by a super-majority vote.

WTOP Radio reported that the waterfront developer, EYA, also is offering to use river barges instead of dump trucks to haul debris and construction materials to and from the construction site.

EYA reached a preliminary agreement with the city to use barges for the project. Alexandria officials say that would eliminate 90 percent of the construction truck trips through the city.

Residents had expressed concerns about dump truck traffic clogging streets and damaging roads.
