Alexandria Waterfront Suit Dismissed

Opponents of redevelopment plan try to force new city council vote

A judge has rejected an attempt to halt Alexandria's waterfront redevelopment plan for sites along the Potomac River.

Circuit Court Judge James Clark issued a ruling Friday saying he could not order city officials to retroactively accept a petition by a group of residents that would force a new vote.

The residents had petitioned the city to require a supermajority of the Alexandria City Council to approve the waterfront plan. They believed plan's supporters could not muster the votes if a supermajority was required. The plan passed 5 to 2, just shy of a 6-vote supermajority.

The judge ruled that residents have other remedies through appeals to either an appellate court or to Alexandria's Board of Zoning Appeals.

Opponents of the plan have filed an appeal with the zoning board.
