Alexandria Schools Launch Project for Elementary Swimmers

A northern Virginia school system is launching a pilot project to ensure that grade schoolers learn how to swim.

The pilot project is launching Monday with 37 fourth-graders at Polk Elementary in Alexandria.

The city's parks and rec department is working with the city school system to launch the project.

The pupils will take buses to a city aquatics facility where they will work on swimming skills like floating, putting one's face in the water and blowing bubbles.

City officials say the water skills can benefit kids throughout their lives.
