A man was shot and killed in Alexandria, Virginia, Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Pierre Clark, 28, was shot multiple times in the 1000 block of Montgomery Street about 12:35 p.m., Alexandria Police Deputy Chief David Huchler said. A woman told News4 she heard about six shots.

Clark was taken to a hospital where he died.

Police believe the shooter left the area, Huchler said. Police do not believe there is a threat to the public.

All Alexandria City Public Schools were placed on lock-in for about an hour. If a threat is identified outside a school, all school doors are locked, but classes continue as normal. No one is allowed to leave or enter the school during a lock-in.

Police are working on a description of the shooter.

It is the third homicide in Alexandria this year.

On Friday, residents packed a local rec center gym to voice their concerns about the recent violence to police.

Alexandria Police Chief Earl Cook said investigators are making progress in the case, but called on anyone who may have been a witness to contact police.
