Alexandria City Public Schools “Lock in” Was False Alarm

Reports of armed man led to day inside for all students Tuesday

Police believe reports of a possible gunman outside an Alexandria, Virginia, school Tuesday were incorrect.

All 18 public schools in the city were “locked in” Tuesday afternoon – no one was allowed in or out of school buildings but classes continued inside – after several 5- and 6-year-old children playing outside Maury Elementary School after noon reported seeing an unknown man on the other side of a chain-link fence. The children said the man called to them and then pointed what appeared to be a long gun at them.

While the school district tweeted there was no immediate threat, they took the children's account seriously because of how many saw the same thing, Crystal Nosal of Alexandria City Police told News4 Tuesday.

Police searched the area, including a search by helicopter, but no gunman was found.
