The GW Hatchet reported yesterday that George Washington University opened a women-only swimming hour at its rec-center pool -- which will enable Muslim women to swim and keep with their religious practice.
The Lerner Health and Wellness Center, which is open to both men and women, will close to gents for an hour every week. "Sisters' Splash," hosted by the Muslim Students' Association and George Washington, will allow women of Islamic faith to congregate in their swimsuits and minus hijabs.
One Muslim student quoted in the story described it as "satisfying to [her] religiously," and the gym operations administrator manager said the school was pleased to accommodate the students' religious beliefs.
During the women-only swimming hour, the school will drape a dark tarp over the glass door to the school.
