Adams Morgan is a hot spot for dining and bar hopping. But starting this week, it will also become a major construction zone.
As soon as Monday, work crews will begin overhauling 18th Street in the heart of Adams Morgan.
An electronic message board is advising motorists to consider using alternate routes -- and that has many businesses worried.
Owners are concerned the construction will chase away customers and cause businesses to lose money.
The project is expected to take 15 months to complete. When done, improvements will include wider sidewalks and better lighting.
To try and minimize the disruption, construction will be limited to between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
The work will also be done in phases rather than all at once.
