Accidental Gunfire Into Home Terrifies Mother

A family in Upper Marlboro is still shaken after a close call with gunfire that came from a neighbor.

The woman said she had just gotten her children off to school on Thursday morning when she heard a loud noise in the upstairs part of her family’s townhouse. There is construction nearby, so she thought it may have been something from there.

She went upstairs to check and spotted holes in the bedroom wall outside of the bathroom. She found another hole inside the bathroom, and she realized that whatever it was had traveled through the wall and into the headboard of her bed.

"I was just right there, 10 minutes ago,” she said. “I was fixing my daughter to go to school. We were just there. We left, because the school bus came. That's how we survived."

She was talking to one neighbor, who had no idea what happened, when a neighbor from the other side showed up. He told them he had been cleaning his shotgun when it went off.

"And how deeply sorry he is,” she said. “I can understand that. He was shaking and everything."

She also was shaken by the incident and accepts it was an accident. She said she called police, who checked the neighbor’s story and the registration of his weapon. It all checked out with them.

Officers took a report and warned the neighbor about proper gun handling. It is unclear if any charges are pending against the neighbor.
