AAA: Busy Holiday Travel Season for Virginians

Virginians are expected to spend more money and travel farther this holiday season.

AAA Mid-Atlantic says more than 2.7 million Virginians will be traveling for the 2013 year-end holiday season that runs from Saturday until Jan. 1.

The auto club also says they'll log 26 percent more miles on average to celebrate with friends and family. The average trip length will be 965 miles compared with 765 miles last year.

More than 90 percent of holiday travelers will choose to drive to their holiday celebrations, despite volatile gas prices. Air travel in Virginia is expected to decrease by 1.6 percent.

The organization also says that Virginians are expected to spend $842 this year versus $801 last year for travel.
