A Rainy Friday Cancels D.C. Area's Spring Heat

Moderate to heavy rain expected for much of the morning, with thunder and lightning possible

So much for that early spring heat wave. For Friday's morning commute, you probably needed an umbrella -- and a jacket.

About half an inch of rain had fallen on the region by about 10 a.m., said StormTeam 4 Meteorologist Tom Kierein.

We could get a little more rain heading into the afternoon, but a bit of sunshine might break out later on. Highs are expected to reach the low 70s.

Skies are expected to be clear in the evening, with good weather as the Nats battle the Atlanta Braves before a big cooldown overnight. By dawn Saturday, we'll have temperatures in the 40s,  Kierein said.

The weekend should be feeling more like "real" spring again -- unlike Wednesday's record-setting 90-degree weather -- with highs in the 60s and sunshine both Saturday and Sunday.

Friday's rain was much-needed, said Kierein, because the region’s been running a deficit of up to 1.5" so far in 2013. It also washed out the pollen, giving allergy sufferers some relief -- but a high count is expected to return this weekend.
