The Anacostia Riverfront opened its new trail bridge Tuesday afternoon.
Mayor Vincent Gray and other city leaders officially opened the new bridge that connects Benning Road to the 11th Street Bridge on the north side of the river.
Gray calls the bridge part of an ongoing initiative to beautify the waterfront along the Anacostia.
“The trail serves as the backbone of the Anacostia waterfront and will connect 16 waterfront neighborhoods to one another and the Anacostia River,” he said.
The trail will eventually span 20 miles from the National Mall at the Tidal Basin to other trails in Maryland and Virginia. Officials expect the trail to be completed in 2014.
