The troubled economy is hitting home for pet owners, some of whom must choose between feeding themselves or their best friends.

But the Washington Animal Rescue League is helping out by giving away 10,000 pounds of dog food donated to the shelter from Pedigree.

The shelter received the donation as part of the "Every Dog Deserves" program, Pedigree's effort to feed dogs who need it most -- those in shelters.

But the shelter decided to pass the free food on to their Pet Food Bank, where residents in need can get dog food free.

The 10,000-pound donation can feed 250 medium-sized dogs every day for a month.

The shelter is hoping to increase donations  to 100,000 pounds of food.

Pedigree will donate another pound for everyone who logs onto Twitter @PedigreeUS or Facebook.com/pedigree this month and tells Pedigree what "every dog deserves."

The Washington Animal Rescue League is one of 10 shelters in the country that's receiving this size of a donation.
