85-Year-Old Woman Attacked, Carjacked on Way to Church

Victim ambushed while warming up car

D.C. police are on the hunt for two men who ambushed and robbed an 85-year-old woman on her way to church in the Brookland neighborhood in Northeast.

The victim left her home in the 1900 block of Shepherd Street NE about 7:45 a.m. Friday. She saw two strangers down the street in a gold car.

The woman turned on her car to warm it up while she scraped frost from the windshield.

The men approached, and one reached in and grabbed her purse. The woman tried to defend herself with the ice scraper.

“I sort of fought with him a little bit, but he won and sped off,” she said.

While she dealt with one man, a second got in the car and drove away from the scene.

“Two punks took advantage of a situation where they were able to victimize an older woman,” D.C. police Cmdr. Andy Solberg said.

The victim injured her knee in the attack.

“Would they do such a thing or would they want that to happen to their mother?” she asked.

The woman is relying on her friends to drive her around while she gets everything in order.
