A 70-year-old Serbian man visiting his son in Southeast D.C. says a teen banged his head with a metal pole, leaving a 3-inch gash.

Petar Sokolavic was walking in the area of 16th Street Southeast to East Capitol Street when a teen crossing the street politely said, 'Hello' to him.

The teen kept walking past Sokolavic, then turned around and pounded the man's head with a metal pole.

"He's just stunned at how devious it was," Sokolavic's son translated. "And then he says the teen laughed as if he'd just cracked a joke."

The attack left a 3-inch gash on Sokolavic's head.

"It's unspeakable why people would do stuff like that," he said.

D.C. Police say they're investigating the attack but no arrests have been made.
