6th District Rocked by Violence in Recent Weeks

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier admitted a string of violent shootings in the city's 6th District have frustrated the department.

The district has seen nine shootings in the past two weeks.

A gunman wearing a black skimask opened fire at a popular barbershop on Good Hope Road SE around noon last Friday, striking and killing another man. No arrest has been made.

"When people start shooting guns in the middle of the day in barbershops, or on the street, or in apartment buildings or anywhere else, everybody's at risk," Lanier said. "It's a big concern for me."

A week prior, a 9-year-old boy was struck in the head when he was caught in a gunfight outside the Mayfair Mansions apartment building. Jaydan Stancil remains hospitalized, fighting for his life. No arrest has been made.

The latest was reported Tuesday afternoon in the 1900 block of Q Street SE, within blocks of three schools. The victim, in his 20s, is expected to survive his injuries.

"We are working a lot of leads right now," Lanier said.

In a conversation with News4's Tom Sherwood and Mark Segraves Tuesday night, Lanier indicated detectives have connected some of the crimes.

"We had a couple individuals that were involved in multiple crimes that resulted in a homicide and they were both apprehended," Lanier said.

In some cases, like Tuesday afternoon's shooting, officers have only been about a block or so away at the time of the shooting.
