WICOMICO CHURCH, Va. -- A 6-year-old Virginia boy determined to get to school took his family's car after he missed the bus.

The Wicomico Church boy wrecked the vehicle but suffered only minor injuries and made it to class at Northumberland Elementary School, Virginia State Police said.

The accident occurred about 7:40 a.m. Monday on Route 360.

After missing the school bus, the boy, who wasn't identified, took the keys to his family's 2005 Ford Taurus and drove toward the school, police said. The child's mother was asleep at the time.

The boy lost control of the car and ran off the road several times before the vehicle hit an embankment and a utility pole.

The child wasn't wearing a safety belt, police said.

The incident remains under investigation.

  • Kevin Thursday, Jan 8 at 1:57 PM FLAG COMMENT Why was there a court order that the Mother could not be left alone with her son? That would have been a good follow-up story.
