500 Illegal Fireworks Seized in Alexandria

Alexandria fire officials said they seized about 500 illegal fireworks on Independence Day.

Fire marshals said they had an increased presence in the city on July 4 and in the days leading up to the holiday. All fireworks are illegal in the city, including those that are allowed in neighboring jurisdictions.

The city said many of the seized fireworks explode or shoot flaming projectiles that could cause fires or injuries.

Fire marshals responded to about 50 calls involving fireworks complaints in recent days. Officials said they also distributed information informing residents that fireworks are not allowed.

Possessing fireworks is a misdemeanor offense in Alexandria and carries a penalty of up to one year in jail and up to a $2,500 fine.
