Local groups are celebrating a historic milestone in the eradication of slavery Tuesday.
The celebration, Juneteenth, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. On this day 150 years ago, Union Gen. Gordon Granger and 2,000 federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the emancipation of slaves.
In 2003, D.C. passed legislation that made Juneteenth a District holiday, according to the National Juneteenth Holiday Campaign.
In honor of Juneteenth, the National Museum of African American History and Culture's Sweet Home Cafe is holding a meet-and-greet with celebrity chef Carla Hall and serving up her "tangy chow chow."
A community learning event hosted by ONE DC will also be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the African American Civil War Museum.
