St. Mary's County detectives said 24-year-old Christopher Kelly, of Hughesville, jumped from a pier Saturday evening and began struggling. Several people, including 22-year-old Christopher Staley of Newburg, went into the water to try to rescue Kelly. Both Kelly and Staley drowned. Their bodies were recovered later Saturday night.

Sunday afternoon, a 57-year-old man drowned in Edgewater, Anne Arundel County police said. Judson Bell swam into Whitemarsh Creek to retrieve a piece of trash and disappeared under water, police said. Witnesses brought Bell to shore, and he died at a hospital.
