Md. Man Suspected in 2 Sex Assaults, 3 Robberies in NE D.C.

Police arrested a man suspected of two sexual assaults and three robberies.

In each case, the victim had just left the Metrorail system in northeast D.C., police said.

Two women were sexually assaulted by a man on a dark bike with a knife, police said.

About 10:45 p.m. July 28, a woman was attacked in the unit block of Riggs Road NE after leaving the Fort Totten Metro station a couple of blocks away.

After midnight Aug. 28, a woman was attacked in the 1500 block of Michigan Avenue, several blocks away from the Brookland-CUA Metro station she'd just left.

Demetrius Julian Banks, 31, of Riverdale, Maryland, faces two counts of first-degree sexual assault.

He is also accused of three robberies:

  • July 31 at 12:18 a.m. in the 800 block of Gallatin Street NE
  • Aug. 4 at 10:24 p.m. in the Unit block of Riggs Road NE
  • Aug. 23 at 3:41 a.m. in the area of 6th and Gallatin streets Northeast

In the August cases, the robber was armed with a knife.
