30 Dogs Rescued from Shelter Coming to D.C.

A group of dogs is getting a second chance at a new life here in D.C. after being rescued from a “no-kill” shelter.

The Washington Animal Rescue League welcomed 30 dogs Saturday. Three weeks ago, ASPCA officials found nearly 350 dogs living in inhumane conditions at the One More Chance Rescue and Adoption in Springfield, Ohio. Rescue League officials say it’s not uncommon for some rescue shelters to do more harm to animals than good.

“This is not the first time that the League has had to step in to save dogs from a self-proclaimed rescue organization,” Dr. Gary Weitzman, the League’s CEO, said in a statement. “Rescue work is not as easy as some people think, and it happens all too often that groups find themselves over their heads.”

The 30 dogs, mostly hounds and large mixed breeds dogs, will have to be re-socialized and rehabilitated before being put up for adoption. Dr. Weitzman says that could take several weeks.

“In some cases the tragedy is, these animals really want to be normal dogs and they’ve never been given that chance,” Dr. Weitzman told NBCWashington. “They’ve been through a lot so it’s going to take some time to get them comfortable enough to get to be the dogs they always should have been.”

Rescued dogs are also being placed at shelters in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and New York.
