Missing Millionaire: $3 Million Lottery Ticket From Sterling, Va. Unclaimed

A $3 million winning lottery ticket from Tuesday’s Mega Millions’ drawing remains unclaimed.

The ticket — which was bought at a Giant Food store on South Bank Street in Sterling, Virginia — matched the first five numbers of the Mega Millions drawing, only missing the Mega Ball number.

Usually, five numbers matching would be worth a $1 million prize; however, the ticket-purchaser spent an additional $1 to multiply potential winnings by three, equaling $3 million

Mega Millions winners have 180 days from the drawing to claim their prizes. Winners should immediately sign the back of their tickets as proof of ownership, according to the Virginia Lottery.

The winning numbers for Tuesday’s drawings were 11-17-59-70-72, and the Mega Ball number was 1. The ticket was the only in Virginia that matched the first five numbers in the drawing, and was one of two nationwide.

Since no ticket matched all six numbers in the drawing, the $61 million jackpot remained. That jackpot will now increase to an estimated $70 million for the drawing on Friday at 11 p.m. The odds of matching the first five numbers, such as the mystery winner did, are one in 18,492,204, according to a press release.

When the winner is ready to claim their prize, they can call the Virginia Lottery at 804-492-7778 or 703-494-1501.
