DC Firefighters Hurt While Responding to Crash on 14th Street Bridge

A vehicle struck and injured three firefighters who were responding to a crash on the 14th Street Bridge during the Friday evening rush.

One firefighter's condition was upgraded from critical to serious and now stable, D.C. Fire and EMS said. The two others who had minor injuries were later released from the hospital.

Fire officials said the group of first responders were helping someone who suffered a medical emergency during the original crash.

While they were treating the person, a vehicle struck them. The driver stayed at the scene.

The person with the medical emergency was taken to a hospital. Their injuries are unclear at this time.

The inbound Express Lanes on the bridge were closed for hours for the investigation, but reopened late Friday night.
