A fire in an apartment building near the Columbia Heights Metro station in Northwest Washington sent two women to the hospital Saturday evening.

The blaze started at around 5 p.m. Saturday in the 2900 block of 14th Street NW. Firefighters say the fire started in a kitchen inside an eighth floor apartment.

Firefighters soon gained control of the fire. It is not believed the building is badly damaged.

Two women were taken to a nearby hospital for smoke inhalation.

The fire briefly closed 14th Street NW. It has since reopened.
