2 Va. Teens to Be Tried as Adults in Fatal Shooting

Two Spotsylvania teenagers charged in the fatal shooting of another teen will be tried as adults.

The Free Lance-Star reported that a Spotsylvania Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court judge certified the charges against 17-year-old Steven Foster and 15-year-old Douglas Hayes on Wednesday. Judge Philip Fines sent the case to the grand jury.

Police found the body of 18-year-old Jayson Marquis Syrkes last December along a wood line behind his home in Spotsylvania.

In court Wednesday, Detective Frank Corona said Foster told him the victim told lies about Foster to Foster's girlfriend, and asked for her screen name on a social networking site, according to the Free Lance-Star:

He also told the detective that someone had anonymously posted on the same site, "I’m going to blow up Steven."

It was unclear in court if Foster or Hayes thought Syrkes posted the message, but Detective Twyla DeMoranville said Foster told her that he had to "get [Syrkes] before he got me."

Corona said Hayes told him that Foster "just doesn't like" Syrkes.

Authorities believe the suspects arranged a meeting with Syrkes by offering to sell him a stolen gun, and when they met, Foster showed Syrkes a different gun and then shot him, the Free Lance-Star reported.

Foster and Hayes were arrested within an hour of the Dec. 7 shooting.

They are each charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, breaking and entering, larceny of a firearm and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
