17-Year-Old Stabbed to Death in Petworth Recently Accepted to Two Colleges

A 17-year-old homicide victim was found suffering from stab wounds by a girl he'd arranged to meet in Petworth Sunday evening, according to police.

Jose Ochoa met the girl about a week ago, and the two texted each other and arranged to meet at a park at the Petworth Recreation Center, police sources said. She showed up with two other people, and they found Ochoa in the 4100 block of 8th Street NW.

D.C. Fire and EMS took Ochoa to a local hospital where he died, police said.

"He's all I had," his sister Leydi Ochoa said. "He's my big brother. He took care of me. I have nobody to look over me."

Ochoa was a senior at Paul Public Charter School, where he was a good student and a football player. Two colleges recently accepted him.

His principal at Paul said Ochoa had no enemies.

"Jose was a great kid," Jami Dunham said. "We didn't have any behavioral issues. He worked hard."

A candlelight vigil for Ochoa will be held Sunday at 5 p.m. at Paul.

Police are talking to the girl and investigating.
