A teenager who was pulled from the water in Ocean City on Friday afternoon has died.

The 17-year-old boy was apparently caught by a rip current and was pulled underwater around 2 p.m., Ocean City authorities said.

He was missing for about 45 minutes before rescue crews pulled him from the water.

The victim was treated on the scene by Ocean City EMS personnel and then taken to Atlantic General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

His name is not being released at this time.

Authorities said the rescue efforts included about 30 rescue swimmers from the Ocean City Beach Patrol and Ocean City Fire Department, as well as personnel from multiple law enforcement agencies. A single-engine aircraft participating in the Ocean City Air Show also offered help during the search, authorities said.

Also Friday afternoon, an 8- or 9-year-old girl was missing after going for a swim with two adults in the Wicomico River in Chaptico, Maryland, authorities said. See the latest developments in that story here.
