16-Year-Old Boy Charged in 17-Year-Old's December Death in Southeast D.C.

Victim's mother says he was killed for his shoes

Police arrested a 16-year-old boy in the slaying of a 17-year-old whose mother says her son was killed over a pair of shoes she gave him as an early Christmas present.

James Anthony Smith was shot before 6 p.m. Dec. 18 on a basketball court at the Frederick Douglass Community Center in southeast D.C.

Benita Smith says her son was wearing the new Air Jordans she gave him when he was shot and killed.

Someone tried to steal the teen's shoes, and after an argument, gunfire erupted, sources familiar with the case told Benita Smith. Witnesses said they heard more than 10 shots fired.

Police arrested the juvenile suspect Friday and charged him with felony murder.
