A Prince George’s County community is on edge following the sexual assault of a 10-year-old girl inside her home.
Investigators believe someone broke into the home in the 5400 block of Linvingston Terrace in Oxon Hill, Md., just before 6:30 a.m. Monday, police said. The intruder found the girl sleeping in her bedroom, police said.
The victim's grandmother said the attacker entered through the girl's bottom floor bedroom window, which has broken locks.
"I've been complaining about 3-4 months about these problems," she told News4's Elaine Reyes.
Her granddaughter will soon go to counseling.
Management of the apartment complex said it is moving the family to an apartment at a different location and offering a reward of $15,000 for information that leads to an arrest and indictment. Police are offering a $25,000 reward.
“As a police department, when you hear about a first-degree sex offense, it's a horrific crime. No matter what,” Prince George’s County police spokesperson Julie Parker, said. “But when you take it to this level, when you involve a 10-year-old girl, that's something that hits home for every single police officer.”
Police are determined to catch the suspect.
People who live in her neighborhood are both furious and fearful.
“I'm petrified about what happened,” said Eunice Grey, who has a 4-year-old daughter. “I’m trying to move from around here. You can't run from violence. But it's too much around here. There's too much around here as far as break-in wise.”
Police urge anyone with information about the case to call 1-866-411-TIPS.
