1 Person Found Dead After House Fire in Bowie

One person was found dead inside a house in Bowie, Maryland, that caught fire on Sunday after firefighters' efforts were hampered by "hoarding conditions" inside the home, officials said.

The person, who was not identified, was found in a two-story house on the 12000 block of Lofting Court, a spokesman for the Prince George's County Fire Department said. One firefighter was hurt, receiving a cut to his hand.

Firefighters were alerted to the blaze about 7 p.m. They arrived to find flames leaping from the garage and second floor, as video shows.

Firefighters entered the house to find someone who was unaccounted for, but hoarding conditions limited their ability to extinguish the fire and search for that person.

Firefighters needed to evacuate the building when the fire grew in intensity and their safety was at risk, the spokesman said in a statement.

The fire was extinguished after 75 minutes. During the investigation, the body was found. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

The incident is under investigation.

First responders will visit homes in Bowie on Monday to check for working smoke detectors and speak with residents about their escape plans. If you need a smoke detector installed, call 311.
