Worker Missing After Boat Overturns Beneath Key Bridge

"Nobody should have been on the water. Nobody should have been out there"

A man fell out of a boat and into the Potomac River near Key Bridge Monday morning and is believed to have died. The search for his body is ongoing.

A pontoon boat flipped about 10:45 a.m., dumping three workers into the river. After heavy rain for days, the water rushed much faster than usual, carrying debris downstream.

Three men from a nearby barge jumped overboard to help the workers. They were able to save two of the men, but the third was washed away.

"Luckily, they grabbed onto the barge, but the boat flipped over with the other guy and logs covered him," a witness said. "I don't even know what to say, man. Nobody should have been on the water. Nobody should have been out there. But this stupid f---ing company."

D.C. police, D.C. firefighters, members of the Coast Guard and private citizens searched for the man for hours. After about two hours, the rescue mission became a recovery mission.

The name of the missing man has not been released. The nature of his work was not immediately clear.

The two other men who fell into the river and the three men who helped them were evaluated by the D.C. fire department. They were not hurt.

D.C. police are investigating.
