1 Killed in Crash on I-95 in Maryland

A person was killed in a crash that closed southbound Interstate 95 in Laurel, Maryland, Thursday afternoon, Howard County police said.

The incident began in the 9100 block of All Saints Road about 2:15 p.m., police said. Police responded to a report of drug activity in a car there.

“However, when the officers began to approach, the driver of the suspect vehicle suddenly accelerated and fled from the scene,” police spokesperson Sherry Llewellyn told WTOP.

Police tried to stop him, but he got on northbound I-95 at Route 216.

Investigators believe he tried to make a fast U-turn on to southbound I-95, lost control and was struck by a tractor-trailer, police said.

The driver and a passenger in the suspect car were flown to Shock Trauma. The driver has died, and the passenger is in critical condition.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was hospitalized with minor injuries, police said.

A woman who was driving a car that was run off the road also was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, police said.

Southbound I-95 was closed at Route 32, but all lanes reopened about 8:30 p.m., WTOP reported.
