Suspects Injured in Shooting Were Planning to Rob Bank: Police

Prince George's County police believe the two suspects injured in a police-involved shooting Tuesday morning were planning to rob a bank.

The shooting happened at about 10:45 a.m. in the parking lot of a Giant grocery store in Upper Marlboro. Just before the shooting, members of a Prince George's County police task force spotted a black Ford Mustang that was reported stolen in Baltimore Monday night.

When the officers approached the vehicle, one of them saw a suspect pull out a weapon. A witness heard an officer tell the suspect not to touch the weapon before shots were fired.

Both suspects were injured. They were taken to a hospital, where 44-year-old Clyde Peterson was treated. Police said Wednesday that they've charged Peterson, of Upper Marlboro, with felony theft and handgun-related charges.

A second suspect remains in the hospital. Chages are pending.

Julie Parker, a spokeswoman for the police department, said investigators believe the suspects were planning to rob a nearby SunTrust bank.

Police said the involved officer is Police Officer First Class David Gross, a four-year veteran of the department. Gross had worked with another law enforcement agency for 12 years before joining PGPD. He has been placed on routine administrative leave.

Shortly after the shooting, police tweeted a photo of a gun on the ground, surrounded by broken glass. A substance appearing to be blood was shown on the gun; police said the gun was one of two recovered from two armed suspects at the scene.

Parker said gloves were also recovered from the scene.

No other injuries were reported.
