Prince George's County Police say that a man shot in College Park early Sunday morning has died at an area hospital.
Investigators say that 20-year-old David Esequel Avelar of Hillcrest Heights was shot at around 4:00 a.m. in the 9100 block of Route 1 (Baltimore Avenue). University of Maryland Police tweeted that Avelar was not affiliated with the University and that the investigation was being handled by Prince George's County Police.
Investigators say that Avelar's murder appears to have been gang-related. Police allege that Avelar had been at a party at a hotel on Baltimore Avenue when the group he was with got into an altercation with a group attending a separate party at the same hotel. Authorities say that Avelar was shot during that fight.
No information about any possible suspects was made available.
