1 Dead in Third Street Tunnel Crash

    A fatal accident shut down the southbound side of the Third Street tunnel early Tuesday morning.

    The tunnel reopened by 6:30 a.m., but emergency crews were still working in the left-hand lane just after Exit 11.

    The accident happened at about 12:30 a.m. Police said a Department of Public Works crew had just pulled over on the left hand shoulder to clear some debris, when their truck was rear-ended by another vehicle.

    The driver of the striking car was killed. The three DPW workers have non-life-threatening injuries.
